About This Quote
The Odyssey is a book about a man named Ulysses and his trials and tribulations. It follows his journey home from the Trojan War and his many misadventures. By the end of the book, Ulysses has been at war for years, spent his entire fortune, and left behind a dozen children with his wife Penelope. Throughout this time, Ulysses has been at odds with Poseidon, god of the seas, who has caused endless pain and suffering to Ulysses and his family.
As predicted by Athena, Ulysses is eventually granted a divine ship by Poseidon in exchange for bringing back some of the Cyclopes’ cattle; however, upon arriving in Ithaca, he is forced to wait another two years for another ship to be built. During this time, Ulysses goes mad and leaves his wife and family behind in order to avoid further death and destruction. A year later he returns to Ithaca where he finds that Penelope was unfaithful to him after all; she had been traveling with Odysseus’s son Telemachus for ten years! Upon realizing this, he again goes mad before eventually falling into an eternal sleep.
